What does it Mean to be in Christ?

As I continue to dig deeper into understanding my identity in Christ, I’ve been meditating on what it truly means to be “in Christ.”

What we perceive is incredibly important. Truth can be right in front of us, but without a proper awareness, we can miss it. Jesus invites us to “abide” in Him—to remain in Him. He says in John 15:4, “Remain in me, as I also remain in you.” When we accept Christ, He becomes our source of life. He is not distant or far off; He is near, present, and active within us. So the question becomes: what does it really mean to live “in Christ”?

Through His death on the cross, Jesus made a divine exchange. He took upon Himself the penalty for our sin and gave us His righteousness. As Ephesians 2:4–6 explains, in God’s great love, He made us alive with Christ and raised us up with Him. Likewise, 1 Corinthians 1:30 reminds us that Christ Himself has become our righteousness. This was the Father’s design—to bring us into right relationship with Him, to remain in Him, through His Son.

Because of this, we can rest in the assurance of our right standing with God. This gift flows entirely from His love, as seen in John 3:16–17. In John 15, Jesus goes on to describe Himself as the vine and us as the branches. Our role is not to strive, but to remain. Branches don’t produce fruit by effort—they simply stay connected to the vine. In the same way, fruit in our lives is the natural result of abiding in Him. As we become aware of this connection, peace is no longer forced—it is received; joy is no longer manufactured—it grows within us; and love is no longer something we fake—it flows from Him through us.

This right standing comes by grace through faith, as Ephesians 2:8–9 teaches. Yet true faith is not passive—it is lived out. Abiding in Christ means actively remaining connected to Him, because apart from Him we can do nothing (John 15:5).

So how do we stay connected?

We remain rooted in His Word because we must know the truth in order to receive it. As we take hold of that truth, we begin to live from it—believing and declaring that we are chosen, loved, accepted, and that we belong to Him (see also 1 Peter 2:9). From there, obedience follows as a natural response, aligning our lives with His will and His heart.

Abiding also involves continual prayer—not just a set time, but an ongoing, daily conversation with God. It is a moment-by-moment awareness of His presence, bringing our thoughts, decisions, and actions before Him (1 Thessalonians 5:17).

As we abide, our lives become steady, grounded on Jesus as our firm foundation (Matthew 7:24–25). Our prayers grow more powerful—not because of our effort, but because our desires become aligned with His. As Jesus says in John 15:16, we are chosen and appointed to bear lasting fruit, and when we ask in His name, the Father responds.
